They are famous for their unique architecture, spiritual traditions, and stunning views of Mount Inerie.
- Architecture: It consists of two parallel rows of high-thatched houses (ghadhu). In the center of the village, you will find megalithic stone formations and sacrificial altars.
- Symbolism: Look for the Bhaga (small thatched huts representing female ancestors) and the Ngadhu (carved wooden poles representing male ancestors) located in the central courtyard.
- Culture: The community still practices ancestral worship. Visitors can often see local women weaving traditional Ikats (hand-woven fabrics) on their porches.
Tololela is often described as a “hidden gem.” It is located near Bena but requires a short trek through the forest to reach, making it feel much more secluded and untouched.
Cultural Significance: Like Bena, Tololela features impressive stone monuments and traditional wooden houses. It is particularly known for its traditional music and the warm hospitality of the locals.
Vibe: It is quieter and less visited than Bena, offering a very authentic glimpse into the daily life of the Ngada people.
The Trek: The village is accessible via a beautiful hike from Bena or the nearby Manulalu viewpoint. The path takes you through bamboo forests and spice gardens.
